5 out of 5 stars Great fun for range of age groups   June 17, 2010
Rochelle (North Vancouver, British Columbia Canada)
When my son turned 5, his daycare sometimes placed him with the "before and after school" kids, all aged 6-12 years. And very soon I noticed that these visits would become the highlight of his day, largely due to the fact that the older kids had the Guess Who game and were willing to play this with him.

Now the very notion of a 12-year old and a 5-year old being able to play a board game together, should give anyone enough grounds for a 5-star rating! But I'm glad to say that there is much more to the product that deserves praises.

Here is my review based on my "what makes a good toy" rules:

A good toy...
*is safe and durable
Well, it's made of plastic. And it has a myriad of little windows, all of which come off really easily. I'm sure it's designed that way, as you can simply click the windows back in again. If it was affixed in a sturdier way, it would snap off and break. But my son couldn't put it together by himself, so I have to help every time. Note that these little windows certainly present a choking hazard for little kids. I do love the fact, however, that everything is contained in one little suitcase, including the game sheets. It's perfect to travel with, and even to pack in the bottom of a suitcase without taking up any space.

Also, after 6 months of heavy use, the sheets are showing no signs of wear. This is due to the fact they do not slide into anything, but simply lays in place under the game window.

*is fun to use
Judging by the cackles of laughter every time we play this game, it certainly is fun. This is also where the electronic version adds the fun-factor ... yes, there is nothing wrong with simply saying yes and no, but having some wacky sound effects adds to the fun, especially for the younger player.

*is interesting to the child
The included game sheets are all appealing to kids, with whimsical drawings, appliances with faces, monsters, etc.

*stimulates creativity and imagination, and requires child interaction
It is totally up to child to design a question that will eliminate some of the choices left on their side. Kids will have to draw very much on their sense of colors, number and shapes to advance in the game.

*encourages inquisitiveness and resourcefulness
The whole point of the game is to ask meaningful questions - a skill that will stand them in good stead for many school years (and life years!) to come.

*is a tool for learning
Kids have to pay attention to colors, shapes, numbers, uses, etc. I believe it develops the ability to pay attention to detail. Most of all, though, is the logical thought that is required to play this game, e.g. "If my opponent tells me the monster is orange, it is not green or blue and I can close all the windows of blue and green monsters on my side". I'm sure many algebra teachers will be happy if we can send our kids to them slightly better prepared!

*is challenging, yet not frustrating
My son has never been frustrated with this game, even when he doesn't win (and he is competitive by nature). I've noticed that he is totally consumed with the gameplay, and whoever wins in the end is almost irrelevant, as he is already teeing up the next sheet for the next round.

Two problems that I have found is that in some sheets, especially the appliances one, it can be difficult to find an unambiguous question. For example, asking "Would you find it in the kitchen", is easy when the object is a toilet, but not so easy when the object is a telephone!

The other problem is with the coloring on some sheets, specifically with red and orange. The colors are so close that it's hard to discern which one it is, especially in soft light conditions.

*invites repeated use
Well, it's 6 months later, and this toy has actually become part of the bedtime routine at least 3 times a week. To be honest, sometimes I am the one asking "Can we play Guess Who tonight ... ! Best thing ever is that this toy does not become useless when the batteries run out. It will function just perfectly with yes and no answers given verbally by the players.

Bottom line - great product, no issues that are deal-breakers. Age range is extensive, and even really young players will have fun if assisted by an older player.

5 out of 5 stars Improvement over the original   May 11, 2010
Ludybelle
Bought this game 2 years ago for my then 6-year old daughter. Everyone in the family plays it from my highschool kids to my elementary daughter. Because there are 6 different themes the boredom with the characters doesn't grow as fast as the original game does. We can easily play this game over and over again without getting tired of looking at the same characters. This is one of the few games that gets taken out to be played still after 2 years. There are no pieces to lose and the durablity of this game is excellent.
I personally took the batteries out of the electronic part, it's very loud and useless. Now all we need is an expansion kit with more themes.

5 out of 5 stars SO FUN!   March 14, 2010

We are having a ball playing this game! My older two kids, 9 & 7 can play this by themselves and they have a great time helping my 4 year old play too! Love this game. Very durable, no pieces to lose, and the extra cards make it loads more fun -- never gets boring. It's a little expensive, but I find all games to be that way. This one is well made, fun and educational -- that coupled with the nonexistent cleanup and portability make this a huge hit!

5 out of 5 stars Great fun, excellent for language development   March 4, 2010
Jaia (Anaheim, CA)
OK, my 3- and 5-year olds LOVE playing this game. They need some assistance, but it's great because you can almost see the wheels turning in their little heads. Great fun for family game night. Also, as a teacher, I can see some really great language development applications for this.

I'd seen the original version but this is the first one we have owned. I agree that the large card format is much better than the little cards in the original version. Also, I have never put batteries in ours and it's still a blast to play.

Note: This isn't exactly the fault of the game, but it's design DOES Make it a little vulnerable to my 3-year old daughter's RAMPANT CHEATING. She doesn't really cheat at other games, but for some reason really does here.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased   February 12, 2010

Our family is very happy with this toy. It can involve both parents, 3 and 7 year olds. Sometimes we can play for an hour with this one game.
